The role of Registrar for the Te Tatau o te Whare Kahu / Midwifery Council is a key leadership role supporting the safe and effective regulation of midwifery in Aotearoa. You will work alongside a dedicated team who are passionate about ensuring midwives are competent, fit to practice, and well-supported in their professional journey.
In this role, you will oversee how the Midwifery Council carry out their responsibilities under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (HPCAA) by leading core regulatory functions, managing complaints and notifications, and supporting governance decision making with clear, thoughtful advice.
Reporting to the Chief Executive and working closely with the Council, you will be a trusted advisor and senior leader who is confident managing risk, upholding legal standards, and supporting a culture of transparency, integrity, and fairness.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading statutory functions under the HPCAA with care and sound judgement.
- Managing complaints, risk, and regulatory processes with a focus on public safety.
- Supporting the Council and its Committees and Chief Executive with quality advice and reporting.
- Building strong, trusted relationships with stakeholders across the sector.
- Encouraging innovation and cultural responsiveness in how the Midwifery Council regulate.
To be considered for this opportunity, you will need:
- A tertiary qualification in law.
- Experience in either a health or regulatory environment.
- Sound knowledge of the legislation that defines the Council’s responsibilities and powers.
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
- Strategic and analytical skills, some political acumen, and the ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of Te Ao Māori, tikanga, te reo and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
