Senior Manager, Metlink Operations

Wellington based

Greater Wellington’s vision is for an extraordinary region with a thriving environment, connected communities and a resilient future. Metlink Public Transport Group puts everything into making public transport accessible, reliable and efficient with low carbon emissions.

One of the great things about our work is the way we help people connect by delivering a public transport network that makes it easy for all Wellingtonians to get to work, school and the places important to them.

Our goal is to be more than just a public transport service, we want to be a symbol of pride for the Wellington region, an integral part of what makes living in our region great and supports our economic growth and productivity. The Metlink team knows that to reach our goals we need to continue to build on our strong desire to go the extra mile for our customers and a commitment to continual improvement.

We work in partnership with our transport operators to deliver over 40 million travel boardings a year – with passenger numbers growing.

Metlink’s role is to plan, develop, promote, and deliver public transport services and supporting infrastructure in the Wellington region.

Reporting to the Metlink General Manager, the Senior Manager Metlink Operations will ensure delivery of accessible, resilient and reliable services to the Wellington Region through proactive partnering, continuous improvement and issues management across rail, bus, ferry, and Total Mobility services, delivering customer value, network management and highly effective, timely communication to customers. You will be part of a high performing business group and have a passionate, hard-working team, who want to make a difference.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the Group’s Operations team to ensure integrated service delivery and effective communication.
  • Owning and supporting day-to-day operational relationships, delivery and performance management with operators.
  • Ensuring there is a focus on customers through working in partnership with Operators to enhance services and customer experience.
  • Providing delivery, operational advice and expertise at a strategic level.
  • Leading operational planning and improvement, including business continuity and disaster recovery planning and ensuring there are best practice business continuity, event management and disruption plans in place.
  • Managing day-to-day relationships with Operators, through developing, implementing and managing financial and contractual performance.
  • Working and collaborating closely with other teams within Metlink and the Group to make sure we’re working together to plan for a resilient network, solve problems and enhance the customer experience.
  • Ensuring your team are clear about their accountabilities, and are supported to deliver on these through coaching, skill development and performance management.

Ideally with a background in logistics, transport or similar, you are an experienced people leader, who takes an organisational perspective and approach, collaborating internally to achieve the desired culture, making sound business decisions. Experience interacting with unions, managing complex scheduling, and building collaborative partnerships with external providers are core competencies required. You will promote organisation-wide interests and be comfortable managing change. You will ensure robust best practice management of a complex seven day a week operating environment.

You must be able to take a customer-centric view in meeting complex and changing stakeholder demands. The role requires an experienced, operational leader, with a proven background delivering great outcomes and customer value, who is well versed in managing continuous improvement including the ongoing overall network performance. However, you must also naturally be a “sleeves rolled up” person, willing and able to step in take on significant tactical/operational challenges as and when required to do so.

Relevant tertiary qualifications would be advantageous as would a background in public transport operations.

Greater Wellington values diversity and is committed to an inclusive, flexible and supportive workplace. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds and welcome the unique talent and experience you will bring to our team.
