Senior Manager, Commercial Partnerships

Wellington based

Greater Wellington’s vision is for an extraordinary region with a thriving environment, connected communities and a resilient future. Metlink Public Transport Group puts everything into making public transport accessible, reliable and efficient with low carbon emissions.

One of the great things about our work is the way we help people connect by delivering a public transport network that makes it easy for all Wellingtonians to get to work, school and the places important to them.

Our goal is to be more than just a public transport service, we want to be a symbol of pride for the Wellington region, an integral part of what makes living in our region great and supports our economic growth and productivity. The Metlink team knows that to reach our goals we need to continue to build on our strong desire to go the extra mile for our customers and a commitment to continual improvement.
We work with our transport operators to deliver over 40 million travel boardings a year – with passenger numbers growing.

Metlink’s role is to plan, develop, promote and deliver public transport services and supporting infrastructure in the Wellington region. Improvements to the public transport system have been ongoing and sustained. Against a backdrop of dedicated ongoing development of the network, Metlink continues to implement and optimise performance and customer experience, through robust governance, better stakeholder engagement, and increased capability and capacity.
The organisation is dedicated to delivering a world-class and commercially viable public transport service, through aligning its internal operating model to meet these demands.

This has led to the development of a new leadership role.

Reporting to the Metlink General Manager, the Senior Manager, Metlink Commercial Partnerships will lead and manage a team of commercial advisory, contract and relationship management and procurement specialists. Key responsibilities will include;

  • Leading and contributing to the development of the Group and commercial strategies and business planning.
  • Overseeing successful collaborative relationships with key strategic vendors, suppliers, internal and external stakeholders and operators.
  • Ensuring best practice procurement, contract management, business development, performance monitoring policies and processes are in place.
  • Translating vision into specific goals and action plans.
  • Providing commercial advice and expertise that supports operating contracts and leads to sustainable revenue growth.
  • Ensuring that innovation is introduced within procurement to deliver improved performance.
  • Overseeing successful collaborative relationships with key strategic vendors, suppliers, internal and external stakeholders and operators.
  • Managing the services tenders

Having experience, or working closely with government/local government, would be highly advantageous to ensure you understand how to operate effectively in this environment.

You will be able to demonstrate experience and understanding of best practice approaches to procurement, business development, contract management (including outcome-based contract management), and innovative thinking.  You have to balance the need to work with operators as partners delivering our frontline services and customer experience, yet managing contracts prudently, as our rate payers would expect.

As an experienced people leader, you will take an organisational perspective and approach, collaborating internally and externally to achieve the desired culture, making sound business decisions, and taking ownership of leading and managing people. You will have a strong delivery focus and the ability to get things done while ensuring you bring our people and our stakeholders with you. You will ensure robust best practice management of a complex commercial regime underpinned by significant and sizable contracts.

You must be able to take a customer-centric view in meeting complex and changing stakeholder demands. The role requires a fully developed commercial leader who can optimise, and at times rationalise, in order to drive value for our customers and ratepayers value while meeting the organisation’s obligations and achieving financial sustainability through revenue protection and enhancement.

Candidates will have a relevant tertiary qualification and a background of success in a complex organisation that requires visible and connected leadership.

Greater Wellington values diversity and is committed to an inclusive, flexible and supportive
workplace. We encourage candidates from all backgrounds and welcome the unique talent
and experience you will bring to our team.
