New Zealand Coach Services (NCS) is a successful, profitable, locally owned organisation, with a focus on School, Charter and Rail replacement services. There are undoubtedly real growth opportunities across those sectors, especially via re-engagement with schools.
The transport environment is unique, so ideally you will have experience in such, allowing for you to “hit the ground running.” However, good leaders/managers are able to transfer their skills across disciplines/sectors so we would be open to sourcing those two have the other attributes we seek and have proven their ability to successfully transfer their skills, but with a “sleeves rolled up, get it done” style.
The previous GM undoubtedly added real value to the company, so both the Owner and Directors wish to appoint someone who can carry on, and add to, that good work.
There is a staff of eleven, which is made up of three support staff and eight in the workshop. That is then supplemented by 35 drivers, including casual staff.
The incoming person must be a very grounded, “sleeves rolled up” personality. They must have high levels of resilience in dealing with all manner of personnel, internal and external. While having support staff, they will be someone who has no qualms with doing things themselves, at whatever level is required.
Further traits and experience include:
- Superior relationship management skills across a wide range of stakeholders including, critically, the Owner of the business. Then there are the support staff, workshop staff, contracted drivers and all manner of external stakeholders, as diverse in nature as NZTA, Schools and Metlink. These relationships are central to both current and potential business growth opportunities.
- A fundamental understanding of the P&L, supplemented by financial literacy appropriate to the role and as would be expected from a well performing General Manager
- Strategic capability in order to develop clear plans for growth and be the person who takes individual responsibility for achieving that growth, but with the grounded manner highlighted above.
- A natural disposition towards continuous improvement. As with any business, there are areas that can be “fine-tuned,” both around cost management, operational efficiencies and revenue generation, the latter via a more sophisticated and targeted marketing approach
